Pop Beauty is a trendy makeup line that comes from one of the women who founded Pixi Cosmetics. I first saw it when I was in London a few years ago and (of course) had to buy as many of their products as my credit card would allow just in case it never came to the U.S. Luckily, it turned up almost immediately at Sephora, so I'm able to keep myself fully supplied with all my favorite colors of Lip Jam. (By the way, you should always check stuff like this out before you go overboard when you're traveling. I once bought an expensive perfume in Paris that the woman assured me couldn't be found anywhere but in France, then dragged the bottle all over Europe, paranoid that it was going to break, before lugging it from London to NJ to Los Angeles. And then on my first trip to the mall, I saw it at Bloomingdales for HALF the price. I think I actually cried. Stupid lying French salesperson).
I like almost all of Pop Beauty's products, but no matter how many times I try to use them, I just can't bring myself to sing the praises of their Eye Cakes. In theory, they sound great. They're little compacts of complimentary eyeshadows that come already matched together for each specific eye color. My problem is that the bright colors (Bright Blues, Bright Greens, Bright Pinks) are way too bright. Even when I use a light touch, I end up looking like a 13 year old who raided her mother's makeup drawer trying to look cool. All that's missing is the ultra chic electric blue Maybelline mascara that I used to wear in seventh grade. (Colored mascara. Hard to believe we thought that looked cool, isn't it?)
I like the more subdued shadows better, but the way the compacts are all set up really annoys me. The shadows are in skinny stripes of different colors, making it nearly impossible to use each shade separately, so you usually just end up with a mixture of all five colors on your brush. I hate that. If I only wanted one eye color, I'd buy a single shadow, not a palette.
On the plus side, the compacts are only $19, so if you like the colors, it might be worth the investment if you don't mind the blending. Just don't pair it with colored mascara, please.
